We are proud to be a member of The National Association of Professional Background Screeners (NAPBS). Napbs exists to promote ethical business practices, compliance with the Fair Credit Reporting Act, and foster awareness of issues related to consumer protection and privacy rights within the background screening industry. NAPBS has membership accreditation criteria that assure member companies meet high standards. CI President, Michelle Pyan, has served on the NAPBS Ethics and Accreditation Committee.
One way NAPBS helps businesses and CRAs (Consumer Reporting Agencies) to comply with the increasingly complex laws that impact background screening is the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) training and certification program. Organizations that invest in staff training demonstrate an understanding of the law and mitigate non-compliance problems with obtaining and using information contained in a background check.
NAPBS is proud to offer the FCRA Basic Certification Program, which has been developed to provide a basic knowledge of FCRA regulations. The Advanced Certification Program is intended for background screening professionals in leadership positions and those who set compliance policy and make compliance decisions for their enterprise.
Many Commercial Investigations LLC staff members have received the NAPBS FCRA Advanced Certification and even more have received the NAPBS FCRA Basic Certification.
We are proud to be a member of ConcernedCRA’s. ConcernedCRAs is a group of like-minded CRA's (Consumer Reporting Agencies) who are concerned about the future of the employment background screening industry. We believe that certain data practices employed by some CRA's place our profession at risk. Some employment background screening firms send the sensitive personal information (i.e. social security numbers and financial account information) off-shore to be processed. We believe that sending such information off-shore places both applicants and employers at risk and should be avoided whenever possible.
ConcernedCRAs believe in the responsible use of criminal records databases. Some employment background screening firms sell “national criminal records databases” to employers without appropriate safeguards to ensure that the information they are delivering is accurate and up to date.
ConcernedCRAs believe that criminal records databases are valuable sources of information if they are used in a responsible manner.
ConcernedCRAs are concerned that these practices do not appropriately protect employment applicants from avoidable harm. Likewise, employers are placed at increased risk of litigation and public relations problems when their employment background screening partners employ these practices.
Ultimately, ConcernedCRAs are concerned that ongoing media coverage related to errors in background checks and the potential for litigation and overreaching legislative solutions place our profession at risk.
