An E-Verify Designated Agent is a liaison between E-Verify and
employers who choose to outsource submission of employment eligibility
verification queries for newly hired employees. E-Verify Designated
Agents conduct the verification process for other employers or clients.
An E-Verify Designated Agent must register online and sign a
Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with SSA and DHS. Once the MOU
is approved, the E-Verify Designated Agent can then begin registering
employers and clients who have designated it to perform their verification
services.

The I-9 has been required by the U.S.
Government for years. Since September 11,
2001, new procedures have been developed by
the Federal Department of Homeland Security
that provide additional checks to verify the
identity of the applicant (known as E-Verify). E-
Verify (formerly known as the Basic Pilot and/or
Employment Eligibility Verification Program) is
an internet based system operated by the
Department of Homeland Security and the
Social Security Administration that allows
employers to verify the employment eligibility of
their newly hired employees electronically.
E-Verify is the best resource available for
determining employment eligibility and the
validity of Social Security Numbers once an
applicant has been hired. During the pre-
employment Background Investigation the SSN
& Address Information inquiry is utilized to
provide some identity verification.
The E-Verify free web-based system requires a
mandatory online tutorial, which can take hours
to complete. It can also be a challenge to
maneuver when the system leads to no match of
the SSN and name. E-Verify and Electronic I-9s
are separate from pre-employment Background
Investigations because it can only occur post-
hire. You can utilize an E-Verify Designated
