opportunity to visit Camp Wa Wa Segowea in New Marlborough,
Massachusetts this summer. The Capital District YMCA set out to
accomplish the mission to open the camp by July 4, 2010, with many
2005. The odds were stacked against them judging from the list of
tasks needing to be completed. The task list included: new septic
system, foundation for the dining hall, renovating cabins, docks for
the lake, shutters, double-decker bunks, hiring staff, and paint,
paint, paint! The endeavor of Camp Wa Wa Segowea opening was
a cooperative effort of many key individuals and organizations.
We had the honor of touring the camp facilities and we were invited
to join the camp counselors and campers for lunch. The campers,
as well as the counselors, came from diverse cultural backgrounds.
A few counselors were from China, Columbia, and Jamaica. The
environment was beautiful and it offers campers the opportunity to
experience the basics of living with nature.
Upon leaving, we thanked them for all they accomplished and the
experience they provide each individual camper. We felt a
tremendous sense of gratitude and pride upon leaving, knowing we
had played a part in Camp Wa Wa Seqowea’s opening.
